Brrrr

Today we went down to Lenin Square during the afternoon to check out the ice sculptures and do a bit of souvenier shopping.

The ice sculptures are really cool and they have *a lot* of them. They do them all over the city not just in the big square. The kids park has a wall of ice like a castle wall going all around the park. We took a bunch of pictures of the sculptures in the square. I'll post some of the digital ones here in a few minutes (we have a bunch on film too we'll see after we get back to the US).

It was pretty cold out but we were dressed for it so we didn't get cold other than noses and cheeks getting rosy. I was almost too warm actually (crystal of course wasn't too warm). After that we came back and tried to make tiramisu (spelling?) but ended up with tiramisoup as the cream cheese is much softer or kind of whipped so it didn't set correctly. They tried to fix it using starch but realized that they were using potato starch and not corn starch so it added an odd taste to it. We all tried it and the lady fingers were good but the soup we mostly passed on. We ended the night with another round of hand and foot (the other couples are liking that a lot). For the third night in a row Leigh and Alicia kicked but staging yet another big comeback.

Tomorrow we have planned to watch all 5 star wars movies! We'll see if we can get through them all in one day.

Both couples with kids in Komsomolsk found out they will be able to get their kids on the 6th the day after us so happy news for them as well as that is also sooner than they expected.

Well off to bed for us now just got to post the pictures quick.

One more week!!

Good news from Khabarovsk. Yesterday we found out that we will be going to the orphanage on January 5th to take Lidia "home" with us!! That is much earlier than we expected! We had been thinking it would not be until the 10th. That being the case, they had to cut this week's visits short. We went today to visit her, but we will not go on tomorrow or Friday. That is not so bad, because orignally we thought we would have to go a full 10 days without seeing her because of the holidays. Now it will only be 6!! We are quite excited and cannot wait!!!

Lidia was SOOO excited to see us today! She practically jumped into my arms. It was so great to see!! I just hope she feels the same way in a week!! I really feel we're going to have a really easy adjustment with her. She really likes us alot. It's almost like she knows who we are!

Anyway, we are going to play cards with the rest of the crew but wanted to update you all. We'll post more pictures later before we go to bed. (probably sometime around 8:00am Wisconsin time for those of you anxiously awaiting)

Another day in Khabarovsk

Today is Tuesday, the 28th of December. It's around 8 am. Yesterday we went to see Lidia. She did not cry, but she was not so sure if she should come with us or not (this time we picked her up in her room rather than them bringing her to us). But she didn't fuss when I took her. She seemed to have fun with us. The room we were in was small, but we made the best of it. Today I will remember to take more toys.

Lidia was much more vocal yesterday. She was actually saying consanants ("buh!"). She took 2 steps twice! Once was totally unexpected and she feel--but she is obviously used to that happening because she didn't even blink an eye. The 2nd time, she got up and got ready, waited for me to put my arms out and then walked right to me! She took 2 or 3 steps, then fell into my arms. We even caught them both on video by chance! It was quite exciting! I kind of hope she is not truly walking before we leave, otherwise she will be harder to contain on the plane.

Other than that we didn't do much exciting yesterday. We walked to the "medium" market to pick up a few things (diapers to take to the orphanage so they can put her in one when we visit). Then we made dinner at Joe & Leigh's (they have a stove--much easier to cook some things) and Brian & Alicia came down aftwerward and we taught them to play Hand and Foot. (The Bodettes will be proud smile )

Today we will visit Lidia again at the same time (Lena will pick us up at 12:30) then at 4 we will go again to the "big" grocery store. This will be the trip we will need to purchase the things we'll need for next week, the vacation week.

Oh yes, if you haven't noticed there are 3 new pictures from yesterday in the gallery smile

Merry Christmas!

Hope everyone back home had a great Christmas! Ours was quiet, but fun. Leigh is teaching me to knit, so that took up much of yesterday. For dinner, we had the front desk arrange for us 2 cabs (since there are 6 of us total with the Blaylocks and the Stichweh's) to take us to the Amethyst Hotel Restaurant for dinner. We had fried scallops with frenchfries and they were so good!!!! We were the only people in the small restaurant and the waiter spoke just a little bit of English. He was so nice! It was quite comical when we asked him to take our picture and he held up the camera and said very seriously (but smiled afterward) "Cheese" We all giggled. He was so funny. His name was Vlad. He took good care of us and we had a great dinner. We walked out and our cabs were there waiting for us. They brought us back to the Mar Kuel and we met in Brian & Alicia's room to watch a Christmas movie. After that, we came back to our room. Adam called his parents and I crashed. I am still not quite adjusted to the time change. I wake up at either 4am or 6am each morning. Once I have been able to go back to sleep (yesterday) but not usually. Hopefully I will get adjusted soon! This going to bed at 9:30 thing makes me feel old smile

It's around 7:15am now. It is Sunday. We won't be able to visit Lidia again until Monday. I was a bit disappointed not to visit her on her birthday, but at least we were able to see her before.

Today I think we are going to do a Matrix movie marathon! (We have enough trilogies and such between all of us to last us several days!!) This has been very fun. We all keep saying how glad we are that we are here together instead of alone. It really changed the mood of the trip.

It's Done!

Yes we successfully made it though our court date!! Now we just have to wait before we actually get her but the next 2 weeks will fly by! After all the court horror stories and the prep work the actual court was a breeze, only a few questions to each of us and it was over. Such a relief to be done with that step.

Tomorrow is Lidia's birthday and we are hoping to be able to visit her but we aren't sure yet. We should know later tonight.

We did make our first trek to the "medium" market to get some basics. In a while here we are going to the "big" grocery store which stocks lots of american style foods.

But for now we are stocked up on pelmini, bread, cheese, veggies stuff to drink and we bought some ice cream to try. It's kind of fun shopping by picture for some of the stuff that we dont' know the russian words for especially some of the pasta stuff where the picture doesn't really give you any idea what's in it.. There are a few other couples here so everyone tries stuff and lets everyone else know how it is.

We'll get some frozen pizzas and a few other more american type foods at the big grocery. But the medium is just a short walk (like 2 or 3 blocks) so we'll probably do most of our shopping there. They also have baby supplies there too so that will work out great.

Just the bit of a wait and then we'll be on our way home with our new daughter!

It's Court day!

It is 7:30am on Khabarovsk on Friday, December 24th. We have court at 11am. I am only a little nervous. I think it will go very well. I will be glad when it's over, however.

Yesterday we went to see Lidia at the orphanage. She looks wonderful! They had her dressed in 3 full layers of clothes. It's a very cultural thing here that children MUST be very bundled up or you will get yelled at! (They mean well, of course, it's just very different than back home). We posted some new pictures from Yesterday. Lidia smiled when she saw us. I don't know wether it was because she likes new people or because she kind of remembered us. It was so much easier to leave her, this time, knowing we would be back. I am not sure if we will be visiting her today or not. I would imagine it depends on what time it is when we finish court. We will write how that goes later...

Wednesday, December 22nd

We made it!

mood: Wired

Well, we've finally made it!

What a saga this has been!
The flight from Chicago was uneventful. We made it to JFK airport in New York and knew that we had to leave the "secure" area in order to check in with Aeroflot, so we did that only to find that we would not be able to check in until 5:30 when the Aeroflot representatives would be there. So, we were stuck in the international check-in terminal which has very little seating. The seating they do have was right by the door, so a bitter wind (tinged with cigarette smoke) was blowing in on us. We decided to chalk it up as practice getting usede to the cold.

So we sat there for a couple hours until 5:30 rolled around. We waited in a line and were finally able to check in when they told us our flight was delayed 3 hours. They gave us a $20 voucher to get dinner, so that was nice. We went back through security and found a place to eat (Chili's). After dinner we went to our gate to and relaxed a while. We watched a movie on the laptop, read and basically just waited. At some point I got up to go to the bathroom and saw our flight was now scheduled to leave at 11:30 (now a 4 hour delay). By the time the flight actually boarded and took off, it was more like 12:30. It was probably better for us to stay up longer and get a little more used to the time change.

That flight was also uneventful--it was around 9 hours long. The food wasn't too bad, but all the same things we had on our flights back in August. (We did find the last time the the food coming from the US to Russia was MUCh better than the food going from Russia to the US--even though it was the same food. Seemed fresher leaving US)
I slept on and off and probably got about 4 hours of sleep or so. We landed in Moscow around 6pm Moscow time.
Once we got through passport control, we camped and watched expectantly as the baggage carousel wound around the room. We found 2 of our bags and kept watching. When the carousel stopped with a disappointing *thud*, I had a feeling we were going to be short a bag going to Khabarovsk. We consulted the baggage desk and they instructed us to wait a while later. They looked and could not find ours, so after a few hours, they had us fill out forms to be stamped and restamped such that our luggage would be able to be forwarded to us in Khab when it did arrive. Luckily we had a long time before our other flight was due to take off. By the time we finished with the luggage business, however, there really was not enough time to go to the Novatel (hotel) to rest before our next flight. So, we decided, "who needs sleep anyway?" and hung out in the airport a while. At around 8pm or so we decided to head over to the domestic terminal (a separate building from which we arrived in). We arrived just in time to find that our flight to Khabarovsk was delayed 2 hours. So, we sat down and waited again. Just under 2 hours from when our flight was supposed to take off, we heard an announcement that had the workd "Khabarovsk" in it twice. When we noticed people start moving toward the check in area, we decided it must be time to check in for our flight. We were right. We checked in with no problems and sat down to wait again. Our plane boarded pretty much on time and left the ground bye 3am. That flight was nice because there were a LOT of empty seats. We had 3 seats and I was able to stretch out and sleep on my side a while. After our 3:30am dinner, I snuggled down and slept until about 2 hours before we landed (Till breakfast--a tasty fruit filled pastry). We were picked up at the airport last night by Kate and Andrei, from our agency. We called about our bag, and it's sounds like it had been missed and left in New York. It may be on the flight to Khabarovsk this evening, so there is still a possibility we'll get it before court. If not, we will have to borrow or buy clothes for court, since we were lucky enough to have our court clothes in that bag. I do have my shoes, but Adam has none of his things. We will know more about that bag this afternoon.

We had visitors last night, not long after we got here. Kari & Mike (who live in Marshall, WI and whom we met through a FERA, an adoption mailing list we are on) and then Joe & Leigh stopped in on us (friends whom we met through our agency--they live in Michigan) and donated a bottle of water so we could brush our teeth (Thanks guys!!!!) We haven't been able to get to a store yet. Irina called us and told us we would be going to the orphanage in the morning, so I am excited!

Keeping in tradition, I woke up at 4am this morning and, of course, could NOT go back to sleep!! So, here I am now, at 6:10 am wide awake. Adam woke up, also, with all my wiggling. He's watching the BBC news. Yay, we have an English speaking channel!

We will keep you updated on the luggage situation and possibly post some new pictures when we get back from the orphanage this afternoon!

We are really going!!!

mood: nervous, excited

Well, I can hardly believe it, but we leave on Monday!! We are driving (actually Adam's parents are driving us) to Chicago early Monday AM to catch our plane to NY (JFK airport) and from there we leave for Moscow. After a 12 hour layover in Moscow, (we'll get a half day at the airport hotel to rest) we will be off to Khabarovsk!

We are all packed except for our good clothes, which we'll put in last and a couple of small last minute things.

I don't know how I am going to sleep Sunday night!!

We will be posting here and on our Forum while we are in Russia. We will also be able to check e-mail since we will have plenty of time on our hands. It will be too cold to do much outside!

Well, it looks like we will be flying out of Chicago on Monday, December 20 in the early afternoon. We'll go to JFK Airport in NY, then on to Moscow. We have a 12 hour layover in Moscow and then it's off to Khab.

We'll have to stay in Khab until January 12, then we'll fly to Moscow, do the embassy things there, then begin our journey home on the 14th. We should be back in Chicago on the 15th (late in the evening) and then back home (probably by midnight or so depending on how long it takes to get baggage).
